Publisher Studio: Sharing

Once your document is built (see Publisher Studio: Basics), click Share at the top right to get it out into the world. The Share window asks one question first, live link or HTML file, and then shows only the options for the one you pick.

Live link (recommended)

Publishes an encrypted copy of your document to Filamental's hosting and gives you back a link that opens like a normal webpage.

This is genuinely zero-knowledge: your document is encrypted on your machine before it ever leaves it, and our server only ever stores the encrypted version.

Two flavours:

  • Open link: a random encryption key is generated and tucked into the link itself, after a #. Browsers never send that part of a link to any server, so only someone holding the full link can unlock it.
  • Password-protected link: instead of a key in the link, the key is derived from a password you set. Nothing sensitive travels in the URL at all, and you give the password to your recipient separately (a different channel is safest).

Links auto-expire after 180 days.

HTML file

Builds the same kind of self-contained document but saves it to your machine instead of publishing it, for you to send however you like (email, Dropbox, your own hosting).

Reduce file size is on by default. It leaves out the decoration (the graph background, which goes dark, and page cover images) while pictures on your pages always stay. Switch it off to keep the decoration. A second toggle includes any attached files.

This one is Pro. On the free plan you can build and format the document as much as you like and publish one live share link; saving it out as a file is part of the paid plan. See Account & Billing.

Updating a published link

Your published document/link is not 'live', you choose when to update it.

Once a link is live, the Share button becomes a small Link badge (Locked for a password-protected one). Click it for Push latest changes, which re-encrypts your latest content and pushes it to the exact same link, so anyone who already has the URL just sees the new version next time they open it, no new link to redistribute. Copy link copies it again, and Remove link takes it down immediately.

Pushing changes to the same link is Pro. On the free plan, remove the link and share again, which gives a new address.

Presentation mode travels with the document

Both a share link and a downloaded HTML file carry the presentation button in the row of controls under their graph panel, so whoever you send it to can put the structure on a screen the same way you can. See Publisher Studio: Presenting.

Not to be confused with graph exports

Image export (a screenshot of the graph itself) is a separate, general graph feature, not part of Publisher Studio. See Graph Navigation.
