Account & Billing

Settings (hamburger icon, top right) is a single draggable panel split into nine categories:

  • General
  • Appearance
  • Fonts
  • Graph
  • Background
  • Controls
  • AI
  • Account
  • About

This page covers Account, where you see your plan and its status and find your licence key after upgrading, and About, where you send feedback or feature suggestions (no guarantees, but we sit down weekly to discuss them) and update your version of Filamental (a quick reload, usually under a minute).

See Top Bar for what the other categories cover.

Your First 15 Days

Every new installation runs on the full Pro version for 15 days, unlimited nodes and unlimited share links and all. Nothing is held back during that time and there's nothing to enter or activate, it just runs.

When the 15 days are up, Filamental drops to the free plan and carries on working. Nothing you built is deleted, nothing is locked away, and your files stay exactly where they always were on your disk. Publisher Studio keeps working too: you can carry on writing documents, formatting them and making them look the way you want, and you can still publish one live share link. What changes is the ways of getting a document out of the app. The free plan holds one link at a time, so to publish something new you remove the old one first. Pushing a new version to a link you already sent is a Pro feature, so on the free plan you remove it and share again, which gives you a new address. Downloading the document as an HTML file and presenting it full screen are Pro as well. Anything already out there keeps working, and you can always revoke it.

If you published a share link during those 15 days, it stays live for its full 180 days. You won't be able to push updates to it any more, but you can still remove it whenever you like. We're not going to leave something of yours online that you can't take down.

At the end of the 15 days we'll ask for your first name and an email address. It's skippable, and skipping it costs you nothing at all. We ask because we'd like to tell you when something significant ships and, once or twice a year, put an offer in front of you. That's the whole deal: you get a genuinely useful piece of software for nothing, and in exchange we get to make our case to you a couple of times a year. If that's not a trade you fancy, skip it and carry on.

Free Tier

Limits: 20 nodes per project, one live share link at a time, no pushing a new version to a link you already shared, no downloading a document as an HTML file, no presentation mode, and no user backgrounds. Building documents in Publisher Studio is included in full, projects are unlimited, and the Help Playground is not capped at all, so create as many as you like.

The line is that thinking and making are free, and the ways of putting the work in front of somebody else are what the paid plan is for. The free plan still keeps one of them, so you can send somebody a finished document without paying us anything.

Hit the 20-node cap on a project? Insert a bridge node from the Insert menu (bottom bar, +) to jump straight into a new, linked project and keep going. Nothing gets deleted and nothing you've built is lost, it just becomes two projects instead of one crowded one. See Graph for how bridges work.

Our aim is to give you a genuinely good free product forever.

Paid Tier

You get everything: unlimited nodes in every project, as many live share links as you want rather than one, the ability to push a new version to an address you already shared, download of a document as a single HTML file, presentation mode, and user backgrounds. Backgrounds are the biggest bandwidth cost, so in future we may split them into optional packs, but they'll stay free, you'll just choose when to download them.

Payments & Licensing (Creem)

We use Creem.io to handle payments and license issuing: they are well respected, consistent and it simplifies account management.

As few people as possible should hold your payment data, that's our philosophy.

Offers

We occasionally run offers via YouTube creators, ask them for a code if you want a discount. Typically codes are limited, so "first 500 installs" discount etc

If you see a better offer than what you're on, you can cancel and re-purchase to get the new one, you won't lose anything, everything will be the same.

Cancelling

Simply go to Creem and cancel, you won't be billed again after the billing cycle. All your work stays yours, still on your computer, still readable by (almost) any app, cancelling Filamental doesn't touch your files. You're always welcome back (though any prior discount code won't carry over).

Security

Filamental works locally on your machine, on folders and files it can see. There's no "breaking in" mechanism because there isn't a locked door: it checks your commercial license is valid and checks for signed updates, that's it.

If the machine can see a file, it has access to it, standard access-control rules on your OS/network apply as normal.

Always download from our site and update within the app.

Updates

A banner appears at the top of the app when one's available. The app checks in once a week for app features, license validation, any user notices, and will update and reset the Help Playground.

Updates are batched and staggered, so if something breaks we can catch it before everyone gets it, feel free to shout at us if that ever happens.

Installation location

Filamental installs into your personal user folder (AppData\Local) rather than shared Program Files. Deliberate choice: no admin prompt ever, faster silent background updates, and a clean separate installation per user if a machine is shared. Same approach used by VS Code, Slack, Discord, and most other modern apps that update frequently.

Other settings

  • AI: connect Filamental to Claude Desktop (MCP), and download both Filamental skills to add to your AI of choice. See AI Connections & Prompting for the full picture, that's the canonical page for every way to bring AI into your work.
  • General: language, editing options, Obsidian import, the welcome tour, and (under Advanced) the audit log and Performance Mode all live here.
    • Obsidian integration: import an Obsidian vault folder, or just read the same folder in both apps side by side, no conflicts either way. See Working with Obsidian for the full picture, and Obsidian Plugin if you're after the 3D graph view inside Obsidian instead.
    • Audit trail (beta): still maturing.
    • Performance Mode: set manually here. It's the last resort for when your machine is struggling, most of our testing targets 16GB laptops since that's roughly below our average user's equipment level (and this only really becomes relevant past 200+ nodes).

Physics/Forces (Gravity, Expansion, Node Spacing, Branch Spread etc) have moved to a bottom-bar popover next to Grid since they're live adjustments to the canvas you're watching, not app configuration. See Graph.
